    •    Was muss weg, was muss anders?

5. August, 18-22 Uhr
Reflexionstreffen nach der Vorstellung am 13. August.

How can we meet?

Participatory theater workshop on translation and adaption

Originally an autobiographically-infused English-language performance produced specifically for a Swiss audience, Mbene Mwambene’s „The Whispers“ will be translated into German and adapted for the specific German context. The production team – Mbene Mwambene (text and performance), Bharathi Mayandi (sound and light), Michel Büch (translation) – invite the participants of this workshop to embark upon this journey together with them!

The workshop participants will be consulted in the early stage of the adaptation/translation project to share their ideas and reactions to preliminary text chunks, scene bits and lighting ideas. As audience experts they can provide valuable feedback for the production team as well as learn about artistic decision-making and some of the intricacies of the translation and adaption process.

Since such a process is only vaguely plannable, we cannot know at this point what precisely will be worked on in the workshop. Some of the questions that might guide us are: What were the original intentions of the text? Which parts must be completely deleted, which can be substituted, and why? What German- or locally specific topics can be found? How can colonialism, slavery and present-day racism be approached in the script, on the stage? What does lighting have to do with it? How do you translate a flavor from your childhood memory for an audience that has never know neither the herb nor its name? What „works well“ on the stage? For whom? You are invited to be part of this thrilling process. What does a certain phrase, a certain scene, a certain kind of joke do to you?

The workshop consists of two sessions: In the first one, the participants together with the production team engage with a selected part of the play. The second one will be held after the premiere of the adaptation, providing the audience and the team with an opportunity to check in and discuss the final decisions that have been made and what remained from the early ideas.

Due to the nature of the subject, the workshop will be in English, German, body language and anything in between and around.

If the corona virus safety measures do not permit an in-person meet up on the actual stage, the workshop will be a hybrid event with either participants taking part digitally or the artists being present via zoom - depending on what is most feasible.

5 August, 6-10 pm / 5. August, 18-22 Uhr
After show reflection on 13 August. / Reflexionstreffen noch der Vorstellung am 13. August.
